Hot Spot Relief Tea

From The Last Chance Dog by Donna Kelleher, DVM

Many pets lick at a surgery site or lick due to skin allergies. An easy thing to do with hot spots, no matter what the cause, is to hold a moistened or used black tea bag on the site for ten minutes twice a day. This more complicated herbal formula will work on difficult hot spots. Do not use super cold compresses on the spot, because it is extremely sensitive and can be quite painful.

  • 3 quarts fresh bottled or filtered water
  • 1/2 cup calendula flowers (fresh is best and easy to grow)
  • 1/4 cup chamomile flowers
  • 1/4 cup yarrow flowers
  • 1/4 cup comfrey leaves
  • 1/4 cup grindelia flowers
  • 1/8 cup plaintain leaves
  • 2 tablespoons goldenseal powder (an antimicrobial herb)

Combine all ingredients in a large stainless steel or ceramic saucepan, cover and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, uncover, and let cool, steep for about 2-3 hours. Strain the tea, discarding the solids and save the liquid.

Warm the tea to room temperature for each application. Apply tea with a cotton ball to hot spot for 10 minutes, 2-4 times per day, for 3 days. If it does not improve within one day, return to your veterinarian.

Keeping: This tea will last for 3 weeks in the refrigerator. You can also freeze it in ice cube trays and thaw as needed.
